Exterior

Exterior Lighting
By allowing both headlamps to turn, the Dual-swivel Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) provides better illumination around curves. When turning speed exceeds 19 mph, both headlamps will swivel to brighten the road’s curve. At lower speeds, a single headlamp rotates up to 10 degrees during right turns and 20 degrees when turning left. Standard High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps are brighter than conventional halogen headlamps, use less energy and last significantly longer. Also, for added convenience, the outside mirrors are equipped with turn-signal indicators, as well as puddle-lamp illumination to help light your way. The LS also features LED taillamps and a stoplight which last longer and illuminate faster than conventional bulbs, possibly giving drivers behind you more time to react to the brake lamps.

Wet-Sanded Paint Finish
The sides of the LS are wet-sanded by hand during the paint application process. Wet-sanding removes imperfections in the paint’s surface so the result is a smoother, more lustrous finish. This process is rarely performed on production vehicles.

Advanced Parking Guidance System
Using the available navigation screen, the Advanced Parking Guidance System allows you to select icons to choose whether to parallel park or back into a space. Align the vehicle, put the vehicle in reverse, press a button on the screen, then simply remove your hands from the steering wheel and regulate the vehicle’s speed by using the brake.

Intuitive Parking Assist
With four ultrasonic sensors on the front and rear, available Intuitive Parking Assist detects how close the LS is to surrounding objects. When the Parking Assist button is activated, the system alerts you when another vehicle or object is in close proximity. Distance is indicated by an LCD display, accompanied by an audible beep. The closer the LS is to the object, the less lines appear on the display, and the more frequent the beeping becomes.

SmartAccess
With a unique secure code, the SmartAccess key automatically enables you to unlock and open all four of the vehicle’s doors and its trunk without removing the key fob from your purse, pocket or briefcase. There’s no visible key cylinder. As soon as the sensors detect the presence of your SmartAccess key, the door unlocks when you touch the handle. SmartAccess even activates the lighting entry system to illuminate your points of entry from the exterior puddle lights to the interior lighting. It just takes one push to start the engine.

19-inch Wheels

Airbags
The comprehensive network of LS airbags is designed to help provide occupants with an advanced level of protection. The LS features a sophisticated dual-stage driver’s and front passenger’s advanced airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) that deploys at different speeds, depending on factors such as crash severity and driver’s seat-track position. The front passenger’s twin-chamber airbag deploys with a slight depression in its center, designed to help disperse the forces applied to the passenger immediately after deployment.
To help protect against certain types of severe side impacts, the LS features front and rear side curtain airbags that are designed to offer additional protection during a side impact. In addition, front seat-mounted side airbags are integrated into the front seats themselves so no matter where the seats are positioned, the airbags deploy in locations consistent with respect to the driver and front passenger. The available rear side airbags help keep rear passengers protected in certain types of severe side impacts. Standard knee airbags for the driver and front passenger help provide overall occupant protection in a severe frontal collision.

Pre-Collision System
A front-mounted millimeter-wave radar sensor on the available Pre-Collision System (PCS) constantly monitors the distance and closing speed of a vehicle traveling ahead. When the system’s computer determines that a frontal collision is unavoidable, the PCS preemptively retracts the front seatbelts and preps the Brake Assist for increased braking pressure the moment the driver steps on the brake pedal.

Vehicle Stability Features
For additional control, the LS features the breakthrough Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. While conventional vehicle control features wait until a loss of traction has occurred, VDIM can predict and take steps to help prevent loss of traction during a turn by employing multiple vehicle features. When a series of sensors detects a problem, the system is designed to use a combination of individual-wheel braking, throttle activation and revised steering assistance to seamlessly correct the situation before a skid actually occurs, helping the driver keep the vehicle on track. On slippery surfaces, Traction Control (TRAC) helps maximize the grip of each driven wheel separately to reduce wheelspin.

Electronic Controlled Braking (ECB)
Electronic Controlled Braking (ECB) is an important component of the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system (VDIM). ECB uses an electronic system to activate the brakes, utilizing a brake pedal position sensor to read the pedal’s position and activate the master cylinder accordingly. A sophisticated Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) helps maintain directional control even during hard braking. To help ensure that the brake pedal is pressed hard enough during an emergency stop, Lexus offers the added benefits of Brake Assist. By monitoring how quickly and forcefully the brake pedal is pressed, this feature helps compensate by automatically applying increased braking boost until the pedal is released.

Reinforced Body
The front and rear of the LS help absorb impact energy by compressing at a controlled rate. To help protect occupants during side collisions, the reinforced side-impact door beams are designed to resist cabin intrusion.

Safety Connect
Safety Connect means additional peace of mind—24 hours a day, seven days a week. In the event of a severe rear-end collision or when the vehicle’s airbags deploy, Automatic Collision Notification can send a request for help—even when you can’t. Safety Connect also includes Enhanced Roadside Assistance , which allows you to get help for things like a flat tire with a simple press of the Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), which can also be used for other emergencies.
Safety Connect is a subscription service. A one-year trial subscription is included with new vehicle purchase.

Direct Tire Pressure Monitor System
Each LS tire is continually monitored by sensors  in case tire pressure drops below a predetermined level. If a drastic decrease in tire air pressure occurs, a radio transmitter in the valve stem, which is linked to the vehicle’s computer, alerts you immediately with a light on the instrument panel. An audio cue will alert you in the event of a system malfunction.

Advanced Pre-Collision System (APCS) with Driver Attention Monitor
The world’s first available Advanced Pre-Collision System with Driver Attention Monito uses an infrared camera that is designed to monitor the direction of the driver’s face while the vehicle is in motion. The system can warn the driver and, if necessary, gently apply the brakes to alert the driver if an object is detected ahead while the driver is facing away from the road. Once a collision is determined to be unavoidable, the system then preps the Brake Assist for increased braking effectiveness once the driver applies the brakes, and it can retract the front seatbelts as well as apply the brakes to help reduce collision damage.
The system features stereo cameras to help detect three-dimensional objects in the vehicle’s path, plus infrared technology to enhance nighttime operation. An Active Pedestrian Detection System is designed to detect pedestrians in the vehicle’s path, and can apply the brakes to help reduce vehicle speed.

Advanced Active Front Headrests
The LS is the first Lexus to offer an advanced active front headrest system. When the system detects certain low-speed rear-end collisions, it is designed to instantly send a signal to an inflation device within each front seat. When triggered, these devices force the front sections of the headrests up and forward, helping to support the driver’s and front passenger’s head and reduce the severity of a whiplash injury.
